The home movies shot around Miami between the 1950s and the early 1980s captured a city in the middle of changing completely. Coconut Grove regattas, first communions, backyard parties in Shenandoah, the drive down US-1 before it looked like it does now. Miami averages relative humidity above 70 percent year round and rarely drops below 60 percent even in the dry season. That single number explains most of what goes wrong with a family archive here.
Mold is the first problem. Magnetic tape binder absorbs moisture from the air, and above roughly 65 percent humidity mold will grow on the tape surface itself. A VHS cassette that has sat in a garage in Allapattah or a storage unit off the Palmetto for twenty years is very often visibly affected. Photographs stored in the shoebox stack in a closet fare a little better, but prints stick to each other and to the plastic sleeves of magnetic albums, which is why those albums are the single worst way to store a photograph.
Then there is water. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 put water through tens of thousands of homes across south Miami-Dade, and Irma did it again in 2017 on a smaller scale. Flood damaged media does not announce itself; a tape can look fine and still have a warped shell and a contaminated binder. It is worth having looked at rather than assumed lost.
And the format clock is running independently of any of that. Working VHS decks are no longer manufactured. Super 8 projectors are increasingly repaired rather than replaced. Even a perfectly preserved tape becomes unreadable when the last machine that can play it stops working. That deadline has nothing to do with how carefully you stored anything.
None of this is an argument for panic. It is an argument for not leaving it another five years.

"Miami archives do not look like other American archives. A large share of what we digitize here did not start in this country. It arrived in a suitcase, and then it had to survive sixty summers."
The City of Miami is majority Spanish-speaking, and that shows up in the work. Home movies with Spanish narration, cassette letters recorded to relatives still on the island, wedding video from Hialeah and Little Havana in the 1980s, Creole-language family footage from Little Haiti. None of it affects the transfer. Audio comes through exactly as recorded, and we can label files and write delivery notes in Spanish if that is easier for the family.
The other pattern is timing. Miami-Dade has a large population moving out of long-held homes and into assisted living or smaller condos, and media almost always surfaces during that move. It arrives unsorted, in four or five boxes, mixed in with documents and loose prints. That is a normal project for us, not a complication. If you are clearing a house in Coral Way or a condo in Brickell and you are not sure what is worth keeping, we will go through it with you.

Restoration depends on what type of damage occurred. Sticky-shed syndrome can be temporarily reversed through a controlled baking process: professional labs place affected tapes in a low-temperature oven for several hours, driving out moisture and re-solidifying the binder long enough to play the tape once or twice for capture. Physical splices can repair breaks or torn leader. Color correction and noise reduction applied during digitization can improve washed-out hues and reduce static. However, once magnetic oxide particles physically detach and fall off the tape, that picture information is gone permanently; no amount of processing can recover lost data. Mold that has eaten into the binder leaves voids that appear as black spots or full-frame dropout. The key insight is that degradation is a one-way process: you can stabilize and capture what remains, but you cannot regenerate signal that no longer exists on the tape.

How Can You Tell If Your VHS Tapes Are Already Degrading?
Climate-controlled storage significantly extends tape life. The Library of Congress and National Archives recommend holding magnetic media at 65–70°F with relative humidity between 20 and 30 percent. Cooler temperatures slow chemical reactions; lower humidity prevents hydrolysis and mold growth. Store tapes upright in their cases, away from direct sunlight, electrical transformers, and speakers, since magnetic fields can erase or distort recorded signal. Rewind tapes fully before storage to maintain even tension; a half-wound tape develops uneven pack stress that can crease or warp the film. Even under ideal conditions, magnetic tape continues to age; climate control buys time but does not stop the decay clock. Digitization remains the only method that truly preserves content, because digital files do not degrade when copied.

Hurricane Andrew flooded my parents' house. The tapes were in the water. Is there any point?
Often there is. Water damaged tape is not automatically lost. The failure mode is usually mold and binder deterioration rather than destruction of the magnetic layer, and both can sometimes be treated. We assess each tape before quoting, and we tell you honestly when something is beyond recovery rather than charging you to find out. Bring it in and we will look at it.
