We are one studio in Boca Raton, about an hour from Hialeah. Bring it in yourself and hand it to the people who will do the work, or stay home and we will collect it on Thursday.

VHS and camcorder tape
Most Hialeah tape was recorded between the mid eighties and the early two thousands, and the audio is usually Spanish. Quinces, first communions, baptisms, backyard parties, graduations from the neighborhood schools, and a fair number of afternoons at the track. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded, because the voice behind the camera is usually why the tape matters.

Slide and photo scanning
This is where the two archives meet. On one side Kodachrome and Ektachrome from the sixties through the eighties as the city filled in. On the other, photographs carried out of Cuba, often studio portraits and small prints from the forties and fifties, sometimes the only surviving image of a house or a person. Those arrive curled, stuck to album pages or with the emulsion softened, and they are handled one at a time.

8mm and 16mm film
Film is the oldest layer in a Hialeah house and the least looked at, because nobody has kept a working projector since the eighties. Regular 8 and Super 8 from the sixties and seventies turn up constantly, shot at parks, at the track, at weddings and on first days in a new house. Reels that have sat in a garage here often have vinegar syndrome or shrinkage.

Miami-Dade sits in the muggiest corner of the mainland United States. The muggy stretch runs about seven and a half months, from early April into December, and through July the air is muggy or worse essentially every day. The county takes roughly 73 inches of rain a year. None of that troubles a tape in air conditioning. It is a serious problem for a tape in a garage on Palm Avenue, where the binder holding magnetic particles to the backing absorbs moisture, softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play.
The storms compress years of that into a weekend. Andrew came ashore in southern Miami-Dade before dawn on August 24th 1992 as a Category 5. Irma arrived on September 10th 2017 with gusts of 99 miles per hour recorded at Miami International and left roughly 80 percent of the county without power. The power goes, the air conditioning goes with it, and a closet that was stable for thirty years spends a week at outdoor humidity.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

Hialeah, Florida
The city your collection came from.
Hialeah was laid out on open prairie in 1925 and its first thirty years were the racetrack and the airfield. Then from 1960 onward it was remade by families arriving from Cuba. So the boxes here hold two archives stacked on each other: what was carried out, and what was recorded after arriving.
Hialeah Park Racing and Casino
A 220 acre racetrack that opened in 1925, on the National Register of Historic Places, known for the Mediterranean architecture, the Widener fountain and the flamingos in the infield. Generations spent Sunday afternoons here, and the grandstand shows up in home movies across four decades.

Amelia Earhart Park
A large county park on East 65th Street built around lakes, with a petting farm, trails and picnic grounds, named for the aviator who left from a Hialeah field in 1937. It is the default place in this city for a birthday party or a Sunday cookout, so it is on more camcorder tape than almost anywhere else.

Hialeah Seaboard Air Line Railway Station
A 1926 Mediterranean Revival depot on Southeast 10th Court that served the Orange Blossom Special and the Silver Meteor and handled passengers until 1972. It is one of the few pre-war buildings still standing here, and people photographed it.

Miami Dade College, Hialeah Campus
The college campus on West 20th Avenue, serving a heavily local and heavily first-generation student body alongside adult education and English language programs. For a lot of households here the first American diploma in the family came from this campus, and those graduation photographs are in the boxes we receive.

Civic and arts
Milander Center for Arts and Entertainment
The city's main performing arts and event venue on Palm Avenue, with an auditorium, amphitheatre and plaza. School graduations, dance recitals and quince presentations have run through this building for decades, which puts it on a lot of family tapes.
Arts district
Leah Arts District
A city-designated arts district in the warehouse blocks around East 10th Avenue, with murals and studios carved out of old industrial buildings. It sits directly on top of the warehouse economy that employed a generation of arriving families, which many of them photographed at the time.

How far is your studio from Hialeah?
About 50 miles, roughly an hour up I-95 or the Palmetto to the Turnpike depending on the hour. That is our only location. There is no drop-off counter in Hialeah and no partner shop. Everything is digitized by our own staff in our own building in Boca Raton, so nothing is shipped out of state or handed to a third party.
What formats are most common from Hialeah households?
VHS and camcorder tape from the mid eighties to the early two thousands is the bulk of it, most of it recorded in Spanish. After that, 35mm slides and loose prints, a lot of Kodachrome and Ektachrome from the sixties through the eighties, then Super 8 and Regular 8 reels. We also see a steady stream of older photographs and negatives that came out of Cuba with a family, which are the most fragile things in any box.
My VHS tapes are from the early 1980s. Is the content still recoverable?
In most cases yes, and often in better shape than people expect. Even tapes with visible mold on the housing come back once the tape and shell have been cleaned properly before anything plays them. That order matters: one pass through a machine with a contaminated tape is what turns a recoverable tape into a lost one. What we cannot promise is a perfect result from a tape that was recorded badly in the first place, and we tell you that before you pay rather than after.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a house clear-out at once?
Yes, and that is a large part of what we do here. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Thursday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
Pickup is free on orders of $250 or more. The digitizing is per item, not per box: ten tapes at $12 each is $120, photos are $0.50 each and slides $0.75. Estimates are free, so call with a rough count and we will give you a real number before we come out.
