Film here came down with the people who bought into Sterling Village and Village Royale, which makes it some of the oldest material on this route: Regular 8 and Super 8 from the fifties and early sixties, shot a long way north, moved once, and then left in Florida for half a century. We inspect every reel before quoting, because vinegar syndrome and shrinkage are common and neither ends a reel by itself.

A week without air conditioning is a week at outdoor humidity, and a ground-floor locker in Leisureville that had been stable since 1977 can do a decade of damage in that week.

Boynton Beach was a town of 2,542 people in 1950. Sterling Village went up in 1966, Village Royale in 1969, Leisureville in the mid seventies, Hunters Run in 1979, Indian Spring in 1981. Nearly thirty percent of the housing in this city was built in one decade. So the archives that come out of it were almost all carried in through the front door of a new condo, and they start long before the condo did.
Museum
Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Learning Center
The 1913 Boynton School on East Ocean Avenue, designed by William W. Maughlin, opened with 81 students, added to the National Register in 1994 and reopened as a museum in 2001. It is the oldest public building in the city and the one place where the town that existed before the condos is still standing.

Boynton Beach Historical Society
The society keeps the city's own record: the Dewey plat of 1898, Major Nathan Boynton's hotel, the Michigan settlers who came down to farm winter vegetables, and the population history decade by decade. If you have film or photographs of this city before 1970, they are usually interested in seeing it.

Oceanfront Park
The city's beach park on A1A, on the far side of the Intracoastal in Ocean Ridge, with dune crossovers, a boardwalk and pavilions. It has been the family beach for this city since long before most of the housing existed, which puts it in the background of a great many of the prints we scan.

Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands
A hundred acres of constructed wetland on Hagen Ranch Road with a mile and a half of boardwalk over it, run by Palm Beach County. Along with Wakodahatchee a few miles south, it is why so many Boynton Beach photo collections turn out to be half family and half wildlife.

Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge headquarters is at Lee Road in Boynton Beach, and the refuge itself covers 145,188 acres of the northern Everglades. It is the last large piece of the landscape that everything west of Military Trail was built on, and it is a short drive from most of this city.

Boynton Beach City Library
On East Ocean Avenue beside the old schoolhouse, the library holds the local history collection alongside the usual civic business. It is the other half of the small downtown that the city is currently rebuilding around.

It depends which side of Congress Avenue you are on. In Sterling Village, Village Royale and Leisureville it is slides, prints and 8mm film that came down from the north in the seventies. West of Congress, in the newer subdivisions, it is tape: VHS and VHS-C, Hi8, then MiniDV. Most boxes we collect have at least three formats in them.
These reels came from my parents and nobody has looked at them in fifty years. Is anything left?
Usually more than people expect. Film is tougher than tape. What we look for first is vinegar syndrome, which smells exactly like it sounds, and shrinkage, which is what stops a reel feeding through a gate. Bring them in and we will tell you honestly what is recoverable and which reels should be done first. Do not seal them in plastic, it accelerates the decay.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a condo clear-out at once?
Yes, and in the 55 and over communities here that is most of what we do. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Tuesday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
Pickup is free on orders of $250 or more. The digitizing is per item, not per box: ten tapes at $12 each is $120, photos are $0.50 each and slides $0.75. Estimates are free, so call with a rough count and we will give you a real number before we come out.
