VHS and camcorder tape
This is a tape city, and the arithmetic is simple. The houses went up between 1980 and 1989 and the families who bought them had a camcorder within a year or two. VHS and VHS-C first, then Hi8 and Video8 through the nineties, then MiniDV: birthdays, games, school concerts, and a great many back gardens that were new at the time. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded.

Photo and slide scanning
Album-shaped rather than slide-shaped, and heavily eighties and nineties: self-adhesive albums packed and stacked, school portrait packs, and the negatives that came back in the envelope. Those self-adhesive pages are the ones to worry about. The adhesive yellows and grips harder every year, and a print pulled off one in a hurry tears or leaves its own surface behind.

8mm and 16mm film
Film turns up rarely here, because in the Super 8 years there was almost nobody here to shoot it. When it does turn up it belongs to the older households in Poinciana Place, Pine Ridge and Cresthaven and came down from somewhere else. Reels that moved once and then sat in Florida usually have vinegar syndrome or shrinkage.

Palm Beach County humidity sits around 75 percent most of the year and pushes past 85 percent in the wet season, and four homes in five here predate 2000. The storage in an eighties house or condo is a garage, a closet on an exterior wall, or a ground-floor locker, none of them conditioned. The binder that holds magnetic particles to the backing of a tape absorbs moisture, softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play. That is not a slow process in a Greenacres garage.
Frances and Jeanne both crossed this part of the county within three weeks in September 2004, Wilma followed in October 2005, and Irma came through in September 2017. Each one meant days without power. A week without air conditioning is a week at outdoor humidity, and a closet that had been stable since the house was new in 1986 can do a decade of damage in that week.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

Greenacres had 1,731 people in 1970, forty-four years after it was incorporated. Then it built. Forty percent of every home in this city went up in the single decade between 1980 and 1989, and the median year built for the whole place is 1987. That is the camcorder decade exactly. Very few places built that fast, that concentrated, and it shows in the boxes.

Sixteen and three quarter acres on Jog Road, with racquetball, tennis and pickleball courts and a StoryWalk. It is the city's main event venue rather than a famous landmark, and it is where a good deal of this city's Saturday camcorder tape was shot.

The largest park in the city at 51.23 acres on Pinehurst Drive, with four lighted soccer fields and four pickleball courts. If a Greenacres family has tape of a Saturday game, there is a good chance it was filmed on one of those fields.

The rentable hall on Swain Boulevard, used for banquets, meetings and a large share of this city's family parties. It is a modest building and it turns up on a great deal of eighties and nineties tape for exactly that reason.

The county library branch on Jog Road. In a city with no historic downtown and no museum, the branch library is one of the few civic buildings that most residents have actually been inside.

The largest high school in Palm Beach County, brought into the city by annexation in 1994. Graduations, concerts and games here are on a great deal of Greenacres family tape.

Forty percent of the homes in this city were built in the 1980s and the families who bought them were filming almost immediately, so a typical Greenacres box is VHS and VHS-C at the bottom, Hi8 in the middle and MiniDV on top. After that it is self-adhesive albums. Film is rare here.
The tapes are from the eighties. Is anything still on them?
Usually, but this is the decade we worry about most. Forty year old tape in an unconditioned Florida garage is where the binder fails, and the failure shows up as the tape shedding onto the heads the first time it is played. We clean and, where needed, bake tapes that have gone sticky before they ever touch a deck. Do not test them in a home VCR first.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a house clear-out at once?
Yes, and that is a large part of what we do here. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Tuesday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
Pickup is free on orders of $250 or more. The digitizing is per item, not per box: ten tapes at $12 each is $120, photos are $0.50 each and slides $0.75. Estimates are free, so call with a rough count and we will give you a real number before we come out.
