8mm and 16mm film
Some of the film out of this city was actually shot in it, which makes it genuinely rare. Downtown before the eighties, the Casino building, the pier, the beach. Regular 8 and Super 8 mostly, a little 16mm. Reels that have spent sixty years in a Florida attic usually have vinegar syndrome or shrinkage, and neither is automatically the end of the reel.

The tape layer here sits on top of everything else rather than being the bulk of it. The seventies were this city's biggest building decade, so the households formed then were filming by the mid eighties: VHS and VHS-C, Hi8 and Video8, then MiniDV. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded, because the voice behind the camera is usually why the tape matters.

Acetate film up there goes acidic and shrinks, paper prints cockle and stick, and the binder on a tape softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play.
The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane damaged the Oakley Theatre badly enough that it did not reopen until January 1929, and it took much of the rest of the young city with it. Frances and Jeanne crossed the county within three weeks in September 2004, Wilma followed in October 2005, Irma in September 2017. In a city of small old houses, each of those meant days at outdoor humidity for everything in the attic.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

The city your collection came from.
Half the housing in Lake Worth Beach was built before 1970 and nearly a fifth of it before 1950. Countywide those figures are 15 percent and under 3. This is five point nine square miles of bungalows and six historic districts wedged between two much newer cities, and its housing is old enough that the photographs inside it usually are too. People here still call it Lake Worth, and the boxes usually predate the name change by seventy years.
Historic site
Casino and Beach Complex
The Casino building and ballroom on the ocean, first opened in 1922 and rebuilt since. It is one of the most photographed places in this city and it appears in family albums from every decade we scan, usually with somebody squinting on the steps.
Park
Bryant Park
The lagoon-front park on the Intracoastal, with the bandshell, the boat ramps and the long lawn where this city holds most of its public events. The neighbourhood around it takes its name, and a great many of the prints we scan were taken on that grass.
Historic site
Lake Worth Playhouse
The Oakley Theatre opened on Lake Avenue on 3 November 1924 at a cost of $150,000, was damaged in the 1928 hurricane and reopened in January 1929. It spent the middle of the century under other names and other uses before the Lake Worth Playhouse company bought it in 1975, and it has been a theatre ever since. The building is one of the oldest still standing in the city.

Historical Society of Lake Worth
The society holds the record of Jewell, Lake Worth and Lake Worth Beach, from Fannie and Samuel James homesteading here in the 1880s through the Palm Beach Farms plat of 1912. If you turn up film or photographs of this city before the seventies, they are usually glad of a copy.
Civic
Lake Worth Beach City Library
The city library downtown, which keeps the local history collection alongside the usual civic business. In a city this small and this old, the library and the historical society between them hold most of what has survived in public hands.
Civic and arts
Cultural Council for Palm Beach County
The county's arts council has its headquarters on Lake Avenue, in this city rather than in West Palm Beach, which says something about where the county's artists actually live. Its galleries are open to the public.

Further west a great many addresses say Lake Worth and are unincorporated Palm Beach County. Either way we will come, so just tell us the address and we will sort out which run you are on.
These prints are stuck together in a block. Is that recoverable?
Often, yes, and please do not try to pull them apart. Florida attic humidity makes the emulsion on one print bond to the back of the next, and forcing them takes the image off. There are ways to separate them that work and several that destroy the photograph. Bring the block in as it is.
