So, like we said, two of the most popular options (amongst people in the know) for analog to digital media conversion are iMemories and Forever Studios. Quite frankly, our two companies have a lot in common. Some may say we have more in common than is actually different about us, but we think it’s important to point out what those differences are.
In this article, we'll break down everything you need to know to make an informed decision between the two companies. But if you don't want to deal with reading this entire thing, I'll just state that Forever Studios is the one and only choice for digitizing old media, old photo restoration and printing digitized memories in the U.S.
Since all the way back in 2007, when Forever Studios opened its doors, the percentage of Forever Studios positive reviews vs negative ones is something we’re extremely proud of, and is known to be an industry best. How do we know that? iMemories has a well earned reputation, and unlike some of our other competitors in this industry, they’re not a company that we really want to try to characterize as “bad” in any way. Of course, we are looking to beat them in any way we can, but there are plenty of bad actors in this industry, and iMemories is simply not one of them. If you choose to do business with them, you should expect to get what you pay for, and most likely not have a negative experience.
WHAT TYPES OF MEDIA DOES IMEMORIES DIGITIZE?
iMemories digitizes film reels (8mm, Super 8, and 16mm), videotapes (Betamax, VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Digital 8, MiniDV, and MicroMini), and photographs (photos, slides, & negatives).
WHAT IS MCKENZIE AI ENHANCEMENT? IS IT THE SAME AS FOREVER GOLD?
iMemories' visual enhancement option is an AI program called McKenzie AI Enhancement that promises to "instantly assess where to add sharpness, remove imperfections, improve color accuracy, and more, all while preserving the natural look and feel of your memories."
If this sounds a little familiar, well, it’s because it sounds a fair bit like Forever Gold from Forever Studios. Forever Gold is a very similar process (though it does probably include a little more in the way of hands on work from a pro engineer).
iMemories did not offer any sort of enhancement until recently, and to be honest, it’s overdue from them. When we introduced Forever Gold enhancements in 2023, we knew it was only a matter of time until it was copied by most of our competitors. While we haven’t pulled a “Spy Vs Spy” move just yet to demo McKensie for ourselves, we imagine that it’s probably very similar to our Forever Gold offering.

WHAT DOES IMEMORIES CHARGE?
So here's the confusing part about iMemories: the pricing system. They have a reputation for being a little on the expensive side because of fees that customers are not outright told about clearly or can easily find the costs for until after they place the order. Be that as it may, the website states that converting VHS video tapes is $14.99 each, 8mm film reels are $14.99 per 50ft, and photos are $.49 each. AI Enhancement costs $4.99 per videotape or 50ft of film and 15¢ per photo. Then you usually have to pay extra for the storage on the cloud, DVD or USB delivery.
Comparing iMemories pricing with Forever Studios, it’s about 20% or more expensive. But we’re going to just say it how it is: The pricing at Forever Studios is “friendlier” and entirely presented to customers up front. For one, we’re almost always offering some sort of sale or discount, especially if you’re an existing customer of ours and part of our little ecosystem here. It’s not very common that you’re paying full retail prices.
Secondly, we’re not looking to nickel and dime you. There are no “catches” with our pricing. The price is what it says on the tin, and it’s not going to magically increase because you have a certain amount of footage on your tapes or film reels.
HOW DO I GET MY DIGITIZED MEDIA WITH IMEMORIES?
iMemories has a variety of different ways to receive digitized media. Customers are supposed to get a free 30-day trial of iMemories Cloud service, and then they will be charged for only $7.99/month or $49.99/year. And there is the option to receive a standard USB drive for $19.99 each or discs/Blu-rays for $9.99 each.
Sounds like a great deal, right? Here's the thing: based on all of the problematic reviews I have seen, iMemories will nickel and dime their customers whenever they can.
Again, compare this to similar services from us here at Forever Studios, where you simply pay for what you want and we’re not trying to get you into a subscription service you’ll forget to cancel. Do we offer a membership service for our cloud? Yeah of course we do, but it’s one low price for an entire year. Predatory pricing has no home here at FS.

Is iMemories a Trustworthy Company?
The iMemories company is based in Arizona and was created in 2006. Over the last almost two decades, it has grown into a big name in the digitizing industry. They are well known as a fast big box company that is known for good product, and dependable service on their good days; and a company that “speed runs” through the process and overcharges their customers with hidden or not appropriately explained fees on their bad ones.
LOOKING AT IMEMORIES REVIEWS.
Generally speaking, their customer reviews are positive overall. Take that with a grain of salt because many of the 5-star reviews don't expound on their experience past "fast turnaround times" or "good customer service." That might seem rather innocuous, but I consider it a bit suspicious, considering all of the other reviews that aren't so positive on the iMemories BBB website are very detailed.
Many of the negative reviews and complaints on the BBB state that the customers felt misled about pricing, the digital download conditions, the company's policy on potentially copyrighted material, and their services. Oh, and did I mention the fact that they have lost media before? Or the fact that they have refused to convert media because they claimed it was copyrighted, but it actually wasn't? With five submitted complaints over the last year (in 2024), these things are worth considering.
Obviously every company has its bad days. We do too from time to time. But our 5 star reviews tell a story. Literally. People can’t stop talking positvely about their Forever Studios experiences.
