Two kinds of tape come out of this village and one of them exists nowhere else on our route. The ordinary kind is family: VHS and VHS-C, Hi8, then MiniDV, carried in by households that bought here between 1985 and 2005. The other kind is competition. Thirty years of hunter, jumper, dressage and polo rounds were recorded on tape, and a good deal of it is the last moving record of a horse that is no longer alive.

Photo and slide scanning
Family albums brought down from somewhere else, plus the largest quantity of professional show photography we handle anywhere. Ring photographers have been shooting this village every winter since the eighties, and those prints are usually the good ones: properly exposed, printed once, and never copied. We scan them at the same resolution as everything else and give you the files.

Film here is entirely imported. Nobody was shooting Regular 8 in Wellington, because in the Super 8 years this was a strawberry field. What arrives is family film from the fifties and sixties that came down with a household and then sat in Florida, which means vinegar syndrome and shrinkage are common. Neither ends a reel by itself.

Palm Beach County humidity sits around 75 percent most of the year and pushes past 85 percent in the wet season, and out here the storage problem has a particular shape: tack rooms, barn offices and garages on acreage, none of them conditioned. That is where a great deal of this village's media actually lives. The binder holding magnetic particles to the backing of a tape absorbs moisture, softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play, and a barn is the worst place in Florida to keep one.
Three hurricanes crossed this part of the county in thirteen months in the early 2000s and damaged the show grounds and the polo stadium badly enough to change who owned them. Frances and Jeanne came within three weeks of each other in September 2004, Wilma followed in October 2005, and Irma came through in September 2017. Each one meant days without power, which means days at outdoor humidity for anything in an unconditioned building.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

The city your collection came from.
Wellington was a cattle and strawberry operation called the Flying Cow Ranch until the seventies. There were 4,622 people here in 1980. Half of one percent of the housing predates 1970, and roughly four homes in five went up between 1980 and 2009. So the houses in this village are newer than almost anything inside them. Every box we open here was carried in through a front door that was new at the time.

Wellington International
The show grounds on South Shore Boulevard, known as the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center until the rebrand in March 2022. Thirteen weeks of competition run here between January and March across 18 arenas and 400 permanent stalls. If a Wellington family has tape worth keeping, a lot of it was shot on this property.

National Polo Center Wellington
The polo grounds, sold to the United States Polo Association in 2022 and renamed from the International Polo Club Palm Beach. Polo has been played in this village since 1977, which is longer than the village has existed, and the winter season here is the reason a lot of people first came.

Wellington Environmental Preserve
The Section 24 preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat, on the western edge of the village. Boardwalks, an observation tower and trails over restored wetland. It is the closest thing here to the landscape the Flying Cow Ranch was drained out of.

The village runs a set of preserves including Peaceful Waters Sanctuary, a wetland alongside the water reclamation facility that draws serious bird photographers. Between these and the bridle trails, a surprising share of Wellington photo collections turn out to be as much wildlife as family.

Acme Improvement District history
Acme is the drainage district created by the state in 1953 to make this land farmable, and it kept the record of how the village came to exist: C. O. Wellington assembling 18,000 acres from 1951, the strawberry years, the 1972 sale that started residential development, and the 1995 incorporation.

Wellington equestrian community
The village's own account of the industry it is built around: more than 580 farms across polo, dressage, hunter and jumper and recreational riding, and over 100 miles of public bridle trails. The Equestrian Overlay Zoning District that protects it was adopted in 2003.

How far is your studio from Wellington?
About 27 miles, roughly 45 minutes across on Southern Boulevard and down I-95. It is the longest drive on our Tuesday route. That is our only location. There is no drop-off counter in Wellington and no partner shop. Everything is digitized by our own staff in our own building in Boca Raton.
What formats are most common from Wellington households?
Tape, in two separate piles. Family tape from the eighties onward, VHS and VHS-C then Hi8 and MiniDV, carried in by people who bought here after the village was built. And competition tape, which we see in quantity from nowhere else: show rounds, schooling sessions and sale videos going back thirty years. After tape it is prints, including a lot of professional show photography.
I have hundreds of old show tapes. Is that worth doing?
It is often the most worthwhile thing in the box. Those tapes are usually the last footage anyone has of a horse, and the ones from the eighties and nineties are now at the age where the binder starts to fail. Tell us roughly how many and what they are labelled and we will give you a real number. We index by whatever is written on the label, so the files come back findable.
Can you collect from a barn rather than a house?
Yes, and we do it often. Tack rooms and barn offices are where a lot of this material has been stored, which is also why it needs doing sooner rather than later. An unconditioned building in this county is the hardest place on tape and film. We count everything on site the same way we would in a house.
