Film comes out of Davie more often than out of most towns on this route, because people were living and filming here in the fifties and sixties when most of Broward was still water. Rodeos, horse shows, 4-H, the agricultural fairs, and ordinary afternoons on land that is now a subdivision. Reels that have sat in a barn or a garage here often have vinegar syndrome, shrinkage or warping.

The tape here starts in the early eighties and runs through the two thousands, and it follows the same subjects the film did: arena nights at the rodeo grounds, school events, graduations from the university campuses that fill the middle of the town, and a lot of footage shot on the trails. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded, because the voice behind the camera is usually why the tape matters.

Photo and slide scanning
Older Davie families tend to have deep photographic archives rather than deep tape archives: farm and grove pictures, school photographs from the building on Griffin Road, and Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides from the sixties and seventies. Prints from that era are usually the only copy, and they arrive curled, stuck to album pages or with the emulsion softened.

Broward humidity sits around 75 percent most of the year and pushes past 85 percent in the wet season, and the muggy stretch here runs close to eight months. The county takes about 60 inches of rain a year. None of that troubles a tape in air conditioning. It is a serious problem for a reel in a barn or a tack room off Griffin Road, where acetate film turns acidic, shrinks and starts to smell of vinegar, and where the smell spreading means it has already reached the can next to it.
Water is the town's oldest story. Hurricanes in 1926 and in 1947 flooded the farmland badly enough that residents voted for the canal system that made the western land usable at all. Wilma took the power out across the county in 2005 and Irma did it again in 2017, when Broward took six to ten inches of rain and three quarters of South Florida lost power. An EF0 tornado crossed Davie on February 18th 2024. Every one of those weeks is a week a closet spent at outdoor humidity.

Davie, Florida
The city your collection came from.
Davie is the oldest thing in this part of Broward and the least like the rest of it. It was farmland drained out of the Everglades, it incorporated in 1925, and in 1980 the town wrote its Western character into the building code rather than let it go. That means the boxes here run further back than almost anywhere else we collect from, and a striking amount of what is on the film is horses.
Historic site
Old Davie School Historical Museum
Built in 1917 and 1918 to a design by the Miami architect August Geiger and opened to ninety students, this is the oldest school building still standing in Broward County. It ran as a school until 1979, its upstairs auditorium doubled as the town hall, and it went on the National Register in 1988. It reopened as a museum in 2008 and the site on Griffin Road also holds the Viele House and a replica pioneer house.
Botanical garden
Flamingo Gardens
Sixty acres of botanical garden and Everglades wildlife sanctuary on Flamingo Road. Floyd L. Wray incorporated Flamingo Groves in January 1927 and planted the first citrus tree that February; the grove grew past two thousand acres before the core became a garden. The wildlife sanctuary and free-flight aviary opened in 1990. It has been a standing school trip for generations of Broward children, which is why it turns up on so much film.
Civic venue
Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and Davie Arena
Residents started organizing rodeos here in the early 1920s and the grounds were founded in the early 1940s. When the town moved to scrap the arena in 1978, about two hundred residents rode in on horseback in protest and saved it; the roof went on in 1984 and 1985. It is now a 72,000 square foot indoor and outdoor venue seating up to 5,000, and the town held its centennial here in November 2025.

Tree Tops Park
A county park on Southwest 100th Avenue built around an ancient Everglades tree island that people have used for thousands of years. It was a dairy farm and was platted for a golf community before the county protected it in 1980. The main loop carries a boardwalk across the sawgrass and an observation tower that rises into the live oak canopy, and there is a nature centre and an equestrian trail.
Nature and history
Pine Island Ridge Natural Area
The ridge reached through Tree Tops Park rises to 29 feet, the highest natural elevation in Broward County, and people have occupied it for more than five thousand years. Between the Seminole wars the leader Abiaka kept a village here; on March 22nd 1838 a column under Major William Lauderdale attacked it and found the village already emptied into the Everglades. Seminole families lived on the ridge into the twentieth century.
Education
Nova Southeastern University
The 314 acre main campus sits on what was a naval outlying landing field during the Second World War; after the war the land was committed to education, which is how Davie ended up with a university district in the middle of a ranching town. Nova was chartered in December 1964 and merged with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences in 1994. Broward College moved onto the adjoining site in 1963 and FAU opened its Davie campus in 1990. Between them they have produced sixty years of graduation footage.

How far is your studio from Davie?
About 31 miles, roughly 45 minutes up I-95 or the Turnpike depending on the hour. That is our only location. There is no drop-off counter in Davie and no partner shop. Everything is digitized by our own staff in our own building in Boca Raton, so nothing is shipped out of state or handed to a third party.
What formats are most common from Davie households?
More film than anywhere else we collect from. Regular 8 and Super 8 from the fifties through the seventies, often shot at the rodeo grounds, at horse shows or on land that is now a subdivision, and 16mm in the older families. After that, VHS and camcorder tape from the eighties onward, then slides and loose prints. A box from an older Davie address is frequently the oldest material we open all week.
The reels smell like vinegar. Is it too late?
Not necessarily, and it is worth acting quickly. That smell is acetate film turning acidic, and it accelerates once it starts and spreads to whatever shares the can or the shelf. We assess each reel before you commit to anything, tell you what is recoverable and what is not, and we do not charge you for a reel we cannot get a picture off. Reels that have been in a barn or a hot garage are the ones to bring first.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a house clear-out at once?
Yes, and that is a large part of what we do here. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Thursday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
Pickup is free on orders of $250 or more. The digitizing is per item, not per box: film is $15 a reel, tapes are $12 each, photos are $0.50 and slides $0.75. Estimates are free, so call with a rough count and we will give you a real number before we come out.
