The Best Photo Scanning & Restoration Services in 2026
Choose Forever Studios for unparalleled photo scanning and restoration services, ensuring your memories are treasured forever.

A preservation-grade photo scanning and restoration service treats your photos as irreplaceable originals, not batch inventory. Look for a service that can guarantee four things: the work happens in-house with human artists, prints are scanned at 600 DPI or higher, revisions are included in the quoted price, and every original comes back to you. Forever Studios, a professional photo and video preservation studio in Boca Raton, Florida, has built its process around those four standards since 2007. The cost of that service in 2026 is outlined. And you are given a list of questions to ask any service, to guarantee that you and your family history receive the best service and work.
Every photo is scanned by hand on professional equipment, never fed through a bulk feeder.
What resolution and handling standards define preservation-grade photo scanning?
Resolution is the first filter. The Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative, the digitization standard used by the Library of Congress and the National Archives, uses 400 pixels per inch as its benchmark for high-quality print scanning. A 600 DPI scan captures enough detail to reprint, enlarge, and restore an image later. Many drugstore kiosks and mail-in operations scan at 300 DPI, which looks acceptable on a phone screen and falls apart the first time you crop or enlarge. The second filter is who touches the photos. At a preservation studio, a technician handles each print individually and can stop when something needs attention: a print stuck to album adhesive, a negative with mold, a Polaroid too fragile for an automatic feeder. Careful individual handling is the single most cost-effective preservation measure, and high-volume sheet-fed scanning is the opposite of it. That speed is fine for modern prints in good condition. It is the wrong tool for a 70-year-old photograph that exists nowhere else.
Preservation studios handle each print individually, allowing technicians to address adhesive, mold, or fragility issues that automatic feeders miss. Individual prints may adhere to album pages with aged adhesive, negatives may show mold, and fragile formats like Polaroids require manual handling that automatic feeders cannot provide that uses mechanical feeding systems. This is the most cost effective way to safeguard a collection of photographs. Modern, undamaged prints can be scanned very quickly using high-speed sheet-fed scanners; however, old, irreplaceable photographs are not suited to rapid processing by machines.
"Every collection that comes through our door is scanned by a person who can stop and flag a print that needs restoration work. That judgment call is the difference between a scanning service and a preservation studio. We treat your photos as irreplaceable originals, not batch inventory, and that means careful individual handling at every step."

LEARN MORE →What must professional photo restoration include beyond automated filters?
A damaged, faded print before and after our restoration team rebuilt it.
Understanding Professional Photo Restoration vs. Automated Repair Forever Studios offers two restoration tiers: automated instant repair ($5) and manual professional restoration (starting at $35). Manual restoration begins with a high-resolution scan, then a trained artist corrects tears, folds, water stains, fading, and discoloration by hand to return the photo to its original state precious photo to near original condition. This type of work is extremely time consuming and therefore very expensive. A photo restoration is charged at $35.00 per image (these can be scanned at a high resolution and include unlimited changes until you are completely satisfied with the end result). The resulting restored image will be returned to you in digital form as a proof and changes can be made prior to payment for the resulting finished restored image. The cost for Reconstruction of missing parts of a photo will start at $50.00 or more depending on the amount of work needed to complete the Reconstruction. Colorizing a Black and White photo will be an additional $20.00. We can also complete any Photo Restoration within 1 business day for an additional $5.00.
How much do professional photo scanning and restoration cost in 2026?
Professional photo scanning in 2026 generally runs between 40 and 75 cents per loose print nationally, with album pages, slides, and negatives priced higher. Forever Studios charges $0.50 per loose print scanned at 300 DPI, with 600 DPI available at a higher rate. Photo restoration across the industry ranges from about $25 for light color correction to several hundred dollars for museum-grade reconstruction. Forever Studios prices standard photo restoration at $35 per image, with colorization available for an additional $20. Turnaround varies by media type and season and is quoted per order. Rush service is available: next-day delivery adds 100% to the base price, and five-day turnaround adds 25%.

GET STARTED →Is a mail-in service or a local studio safer for irreplaceable photos?
Mail-in versus local drop-off: what actually differs once your photos leave your hands.
Shipping introduces the single largest risk in the preservation process, and it is the one step no national mail-in service can remove. Your photos travel twice through carrier networks, and the standard remedy for a lost box is a refund of the service fee, not the return of your grandmother's wedding album. A local studio removes that risk entirely for nearby customers. Forever Studios customers in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties can drop off and pick up in person at the Boca Raton studio; free pickup is available on orders $250 or more, often same-day for pickup. Customers elsewhere in the country ship to one facility where every step, scanning, restoration, and quality review, happens under one roof. There is no subcontracting and no second shipping leg to an overseas restoration vendor, which keeps the chain of custody at a single address. Customer for the cost of the service and for the shipping. However, items of irreplaceable value such as a grandmother’s wedding photos cannot be recovered or replaced.
What five questions should you ask before choosing a photo scanning service?
Shipping or dropping off, the questions worth asking are the same.
Are revisions included or charged separately?+
Clarify whether proof review and correction rounds cost extra. AI-automated services often do not offer revisions at all. Forever Studios includes unlimited revision rounds on manual restoration until the result matches your approval.
What resolution is used for scanning?+
DPI for scan resolution: All scan resolution should be expressed in DPI (dots per inch). Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative recommends a minimum of 400 DPI for digitizing printed materials. The Forever Studios scans of these printed materials are provided at 600 DPI. Printed materials scanned at less than 300 DPI will be visibly pixelated when cropped and/or enlarged.
Where does the studio scan your photos?+
Ask whether scanning happens in-house or is subcontracted. In-house operations maintain one chain of custody and allow you to visit. Subcontracted scanning adds a second shipping leg and a second set of hands. Forever Studios scans every print at its Boca Raton facility with no third-party involvement.

"I've been so blown away by Forever Studios work. I had them restore some old photos, and the price was much lower than what I've paid locally; the turnaround was phenomenally fast, just 2 days, and they produced high-quality restorations. They passed my test. I'm sending more photos for restoration this week."

"For the past year, I’ve been tackling the chore of purging, organizing and digitizing photos from our pre-digital life. Forever Studios has made the digitizing part of the easy! I still have the hard part of organizing them on my computer, but at least I don’t have to sit at a scanner for thousands of photos. Forever Studios makes shipping smooth & they keep me updated along the entire process. While I would be even happier with a less costly and less frilly flash drive, it’s nice to have. I recommend Forever Studios whole heartedly."
