Some of the oldest photographic material we handle comes out of the historic districts: Old Northwood, Flamingo Park, Grandview Heights, the Northwest district. Studio portraits on card mounts, deckle-edged prints from the twenties and thirties, and in a few cases negatives on film stock that went out of production generations ago. Newer households bring the usual: albums, portrait packs and envelopes of negatives.

VHS and camcorder tape
A third of the housing in this city went up after 2000, and the people who moved into it arrived carrying tape. That is the largest single category we collect here: VHS and VHS-C from the eighties and nineties, Hi8 and Video8, then MiniDV, most of it shot somewhere else and moved at least once. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded, because the voice behind the camera is usually why the tape matters.

Two sources again. Some of it was shot here, which makes it rare footage of a city that has rebuilt much of itself since: Clematis Street before the nineties, the Palm Beach Mall when it opened, Morrison Field. The rest came down with people who retired here. Regular 8, Super 8 and 16mm, all of it assessed before we quote.

In the historic districts the problem is a 1925 house with a wooden attic that gets to 110 degrees by August, which is where the oldest material in this city has usually been kept. Acetate film in that attic goes acidic and starts to shrink, and the binder holding magnetic particles to a tape softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play.
The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane destroyed 1,711 homes in this city and damaged 6,369 more, which is the reason so little survives from before it. Frances and Jeanne both crossed in September 2004, Wilma followed in October 2005, and Irma came through in September 2017, each taking the power out for days. A week without air conditioning is a week at outdoor humidity, and a closet stable for forty years does its damage in that week.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

Flagler had it platted in 1893 to house the people who served his hotels, and eleven National Register historic districts survive from that era. But only one home in eight here predates 1950, and more than one in three was built after 2000. So we open two completely different kinds of box in this city, and they are rarely on the same street.

Norton Museum of Art
The Norton on South Dixie Highway is the county's major art museum and has been a fixture of this city since it opened in 1941. Its expansions are one of the few things that draw people from the whole county into West Palm Beach rather than past it, which is why school trips here turn up on so much family tape.
Historic site
Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens
The historic home, studio and rare palm gardens of the sculptor Ann Weaver Norton, kept as a two acre garden of her monumental brick and granite work. It is one of the quietest places in the city and one of the few surviving artist properties of its era.

Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts
The county's main performing arts centre, on Okeechobee Boulevard. Recitals, graduations and touring shows here are on a great deal of the camcorder tape that comes to us from across Palm Beach County, not just from this city.

Historical Society of Palm Beach County
The society runs the Richard and Pat Johnson History Museum inside the restored 1916 county courthouse downtown, and holds the county's photographic archive. If you turn up film or photographs of this city before the seventies, it is worth showing them.

Cox Science Center and Aquarium
The science centre and aquarium in Dreher Park, formerly the South Florida Science Center. Along with the zoo next door it is where most of this county's school field trips happened, which puts it in the background of a lot of eighties and nineties tape.

Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation Society
The zoo occupies part of Dreher Park off Summit Boulevard and has been drawing families here for decades. It is one of the handful of places in West Palm Beach that looks recognisably like itself in a photograph from forty years ago.

In the historic districts we see photographic material older than almost anything else: mounted portraits, prints from the twenties, and occasionally negatives on stock that has not been made in seventy years. In the newer buildings it is tape, mostly shot elsewhere and carried in.
I have photographs older than anything you have described. Can you handle them?
Almost certainly, and please do not try to clean them yourself. Mounted prints, tintypes, glass and early negatives all need different handling, and the usual advice you find online is written for ordinary snapshots. Bring them in as they are and we will tell you what each one needs before anything is touched.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a house clear-out at once?
Yes, and that is a large part of what we do here. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Tuesday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
