This is a tape city, because the houses and the families arrived exactly when the camcorder did. VHS and VHS-C from the mid eighties, Hi8 and Video8 through the nineties, MiniDV into the two thousands: school concerts, sports at Mullins Park, swim meets at the aquatic complex, and a great many birthdays in back gardens that were new at the time. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded, because the voice behind the camera is usually why the tape matters.

Photo and slide scanning
Coral Springs photo collections are usually album-shaped rather than slide-shaped: self-adhesive albums from the late seventies onward, packed and stacked, plus school portrait packs and the negatives that came back in the envelope. Self-adhesive pages are the ones to worry about. The adhesive yellows and grips, and a print pulled off one in a hurry tears.

Film turns up less often here than tape or prints, and when it does it up it usually came with the family rather than being shot in the city, which means it is older and has already moved at least once. Regular 8 and Super 8 from the fifties and sixties, filmed somewhere north. Reels that have then sat in a Florida garage often have vinegar syndrome or shrinkage.

Broward humidity sits around 75 percent most of the year and pushes past 85 percent in the wet season, and the muggy stretch here runs close to eight months, from early April into December. The county takes about 60 inches of rain a year. None of that troubles a tape in air conditioning. It is a serious problem for a tape in a garage off Riverside Drive, where the binder holding magnetic particles to the backing absorbs moisture, softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play.
Wilma came across on October 24th 2005 with an eye wide enough to cover most of Broward, and the city estimated afterwards that the storms of 2004 and 2005 had cut its tree canopy by about a third. Irma followed on September 10th 2017, and the Coral Springs station recorded 49 mile per hour sustained winds with an 89 mile per hour gust at three in the afternoon. The power goes, the air conditioning goes with it, and a closet that was stable for thirty years spends a week at outdoor humidity.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

The city your collection came from.
Coral Springs was drawn on paper before anyone lived in it. The developer bought 3,869 acres of cattle land in 1961, the city was chartered in 1963, and the first 536 lots went on sale in 1964. There were 1,489 people here in 1970 and 79,443 by 1990. So almost every box we open from this city starts in the mid seventies, and the thickest layer in it is eighties and nineties tape.
Historic site
Coral Springs Covered Bridge
Built in 1964, the forty foot covered bridge was the first permanent structure in the city and went up to market the new town. It carries Northwest 95th Avenue over a canal, takes cars and pedestrians, and is the only covered bridge on a public right of way in Florida. It came through Cleo in 1964 and Wilma in 2005 with little damage, and the city keeps it to its 1964 appearance.

Sixty two acres on Ben Geiger Drive, and the city's main athletic hub: soccer, baseball, softball and artificial turf football fields, basketball, tennis, pickleball and sand volleyball courts, batting cages, a swimming pool, playground and pavilions. If a Coral Springs family has tape of a Saturday game, there is a good chance it was filmed here.
Nature
Tall Cypress Natural Area
68.36 acres on Turtle Run Boulevard, designated an Environmentally Sensitive Land Area and run by Broward County, open sunrise to sunset. It has paved and unpaved walking trails, benches and picnic tables under shade. It is one of the few pieces of the northwest county left roughly as it was before the city was drawn.
Civic and arts
Coral Springs Center for the Arts
The city's performing arts venue on Coral Springs Drive, opened in 1989 and reopened under its present name in 1996 after a four and a half million dollar renovation that fixed the acoustics and created the art museum inside it. The theatre seats 1,471 and runs touring productions, music and comedy alongside a school day series. School performances here are on a lot of family tape.

Coral Springs Museum of Art
The museum shares the arts centre building on Coral Springs Drive and was created in the renovation of that complex in the mid nineties. It runs a permanent collection alongside rotating exhibitions of national and Florida artists, plus art education programmes and group tours. It is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Sports
Coral Springs Aquatic Complex
The complex on Royal Palm Boulevard draws more than six hundred thousand visitors a year. It has fifty metre and twenty five metre competition pools, a diving well with platforms up to ten metres, and a teaching pool, all geothermally heated and cooled. A generation of this city's children learned to swim here, and the meets are on camcorder tape by the hour.

Everything is digitized by our own staff in our own building in Boca Raton, so nothing is shipped out of state or handed to a third party.
What formats are most common from Coral Springs households?
Tape, and a lot of it. VHS and VHS-C from the mid eighties, Hi8 and Video8 through the nineties, then MiniDV. The city filled in between 1970 and 2000, so the camcorder years and the building years are the same years. After tape it is self-adhesive photo albums and negatives. Film is the least common thing we see from this city, and when it appears it usually came from somewhere else.
The photos are stuck to the album pages. Can you still scan them?
Yes, and please do not pull them off yourself. Those self-adhesive pages yellow and grip harder with age, and a print pulled in a hurry tears or takes its own surface off. We separate them by hand, slowly, and if one will not come away safely we scan it in the page rather than risk it. You get the album back as it came in.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a house clear-out at once?
Yes, and that is a large part of what we do here. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Thursday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
Pickup is free on orders of $250 or more. The digitizing is per item, not per box: ten tapes at $12 each is $120, photos are $0.50 each and slides $0.75. Estimates are free, so call with a rough count and we will give you a real number before we come out.
