Photo and slide scanning
Slide carousels turn up here in quantity, because the households that moved in were forming families in the years when a Kodak projector was how you showed anyone anything. After the carousels come the prints: shoeboxes, studio portrait packs, and self-adhesive albums from the late seventies whose pages yellow and grip harder every year.

The tape layer here is thinner than in the western cities and it starts later, because the camcorder arrived after most of these households had already moved in. What there is tends to be grandchildren: visits, birthdays at the house, the pier, the beach. VHS and VHS-C through the eighties and nineties, then Hi8 and MiniDV. We transfer the audio exactly as recorded.

The binder that holds magnetic particles to the backing of a tape absorbs moisture, softens and sheds onto the heads the first time you press play, and a condo balcony closet is warmer and wetter than anywhere else in the building.
Wilma came ashore on October 24th 2005 and took the power out across north Broward for days. Irma followed on September 10th 2017. In a city where a lot of the media lives in single-storey condo storage and in garages, a week without air conditioning is a week at outdoor humidity, and a closet that had been stable since 1978 gets one season's worth of damage in five days.
Where they end up instead: a climate-controlled floor, not a garage in August.

Deerfield Beach, Florida
The city your collection came from.
Deerfield Beach stayed a farming town longer than its neighbours. There were 2,088 people here in 1950. Then the condos went up: 16,662 by 1970, 39,193 by 1980, and more than half the housing in the city dates from those two decades. Most of the people who moved into it were already retired, which is why the boxes we open here so often start in the 1950s and were shot a long way north of Florida.
Historic site
The Butler House
Built in 1923 on East Hillsboro Boulevard and now on the National Register, the Butler House is kept by the Deerfield Beach Historical Society along with the 1920 schoolhouse, the red caboose, the 1926 elementary school and the 1926 train station. If you want to see what this place looked like when it was still a farming town, that collection is where it survives.

Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier
The pier runs 976 feet into the Atlantic at Northeast 21st Avenue and has been the thing people photograph in this city for as long as people have been photographing this city. It shows up in family albums from every decade we handle, usually with somebody squinting into the sun at the rail.

Constitution Park and Arboretum
Thirty-plus acres on West Hillsboro Boulevard with an arboretum, playing fields, playgrounds and a lake loop. It is the west-side counterpart to the beach: the park where the Saturday games and the school picnics happened, which makes it the backdrop on a lot of the camcorder tape from this city.

Quiet Waters Park
A Broward County park on the western edge of the city, with lakes, cable waterskiing, campsites and miles of trail. It has been drawing family weekends since long before most of the surrounding subdivisions existed, and it is one of the few places in north Broward that still looks roughly like itself in a forty year old photograph.

Deerfield Island Park
An island in the Intracoastal reachable only by boat, run by Broward County as a natural area with boardwalks through mangrove and hammock. It was cut off from the mainland when the Royal Palm Canal was dug, and it is the closest thing left to the landscape the first settlers found here in the 1870s.

The small waterfront park on the Intracoastal by the north beach, with boat ramps, picnic shelters and a view back up the waterway. It is where a lot of this city's boats went in and out, and where a lot of the fishing photographs that end up in our scanners were taken.

How far is your studio from Deerfield Beach?
About 9 miles, roughly 15 minutes up I-95 or Federal Highway. That is our only location. There is no drop-off counter in Deerfield Beach and no partner shop. Everything is digitized by our own staff in our own building in Boca Raton, so nothing is shipped out of state or handed to a third party.
What formats are most common from Deerfield Beach households?
Film and slides more than anywhere else we go, then prints, then tape. The condos filled between 1970 and 1990 with people who were already retired, so what arrives here is usually a whole family archive that moved down from the north at once: 8mm reels from the fifties and sixties, carousels of Kodachrome, and then a thinner layer of VHS shot after they got here.
The reels smell like vinegar. Is it too late?
Usually not, but it is a clock. That smell is acetate film breaking down, and it speeds up in heat and humidity, which is why reels that came from a cold basement start failing after a few years in a Florida garage. Bring them in and we will tell you honestly what is still recoverable and which reels should go first. Do not seal them in a bag, it makes it worse.
Can you do a condo clear-out or an estate all at once?
Yes, and in Century Village and Crystal Lake that is most of what we do. You do not need to sort anything first. We catalogue every item on intake, so you get an actual list of what was in those boxes, which is often the first time anyone in the family has known. At that volume the Thursday pickup is free.
What does it cost in total?
Pickup is free on orders of $250 or more. The digitizing is per item, not per box: ten tapes at $12 each is $120, photos are $0.50 each and slides $0.75. Estimates are free, so call with a rough count and we will give you a real number before we come out.
