Two distinct layers, and they usually arrive in the same box. Underneath: 35mm slides and small square prints from the fifties and sixties, when the fields were still being sold off. On top: self-adhesive albums from the late seventies onward, packed and stacked, plus school portrait packs and the negatives that came back in the envelope.

8mm and 16mm film
Film here splits two ways. Some of it was shot locally in the fifties and sixties by the first suburban wave, which makes it genuinely rare footage of a city that no longer looks like that. The rest came down with retirees and was shot somewhere north. Either way it has spent decades in Florida heat, so we assess before we promise anything.

Wilma crossed on October 24th 2005 and Irma followed on September 10th 2017, and both of them took the power out along this stretch of the coast for days. In a city where nearly half the housing went up before 1980 and a lot of it has single-storey storage, a week without air conditioning is a week at outdoor humidity. Closets that had been stable for thirty years do their damage in that week.

The city your collection came from.
Pompano Beach was a farm town with a railroad stop, and it stayed one for half a century. There were 5,682 people here in 1950. By 1970 there were 38,587, and the bean fields had become subdivisions and golf courses. That is why the collections from this city so often begin with slides and 8mm from the first wave and then jump straight into a thick seam of eighties and nineties tape from their children.
Museum
Blanche Ely House Museum
The restored home of the educators Blanche and Joseph Ely on Northwest 6th Avenue, reopened as a museum in March 2019. It holds the history of the Northwest Community, and it is one of the few places where the photographic record of that part of Pompano Beach has been gathered and kept deliberately rather than by accident.
Civic and arts
Ali Cultural Arts Center
On Dr Martin Luther King Boulevard, the Ali presents the history and culture of the city's African American community through exhibitions, music and classes. The building itself is part of the story it tells, and it runs the kind of programming that fills family camcorder tape twenty years later.

Bailey Contemporary Arts
BaCA sits in the old downtown and runs galleries, studios and artist residencies in a building that was part of the original commercial strip. It is the clearest example of the current downtown redevelopment reusing what the farming town left behind rather than clearing it.

Pompano Beach Cultural Center
The city's main venue for performance, exhibitions and the public library branch that shares the building. School shows, recitals and graduations here are on a lot of the tape that comes through our hands from this city.
Pier
Fisher Family Pier
The pier at Northeast 6th Street runs nearly 900 feet into the Atlantic and anchors the Fishing Village district. It also carries the First Marine Amphibious Landing Monument. Like the old pier it replaced, it is the thing people in this city photograph, which means it turns up in albums from every decade.
Sports
Pompano Beach Golf Club
The municipal club on North Federal Highway runs two eighteen hole courses, the Pines at par 72 and over 7,100 yards and the Palms at par 71 and over 6,280 yards. It went in when the farmland was being converted, and it is one of the reasons the retiree wave chose this city over its neighbours.

Some of this was shot here in the sixties. Is that worth digitizing?
More than people expect. Footage of this city before the fields were built on barely exists, because almost nobody was filming and what was filmed has mostly been thrown away. If you have 8mm of Pompano Beach in the fifties or sixties, that is genuinely rare material, and the historical society is usually interested in a copy if you are willing.
Can you digitize a whole estate or a house clear-out at once?
