Compare Costco VHS to DVD to Walmart DVD
Looking to digitize your VHS or Betamax tape library into modern digital formats? You are not alone. The VHS tape, otherwise known as the Video Home System was introduced to America in the year 1977. Millions of consumers captured family videos on their gigantic handheld camcorders to videotape family vacations, birthdays and other special family occasions. It was fairly easy to record your home movies (and test Dads videography skills) on VHS tapes or VHS Camcorder tapes and enjoy your family memories over and over again on that gigantic tube television in your living room.
Then, poof! Everyone in the family grew up and technology changed. We had the DVD, and the DVR and Mini DV tapes, Hi8 tapes, SD cards and Cloud storage and on and on. But as it turns out, a lot of us still have those old VHS tapes laying around and are wondering who is the best company to digitize home movies and relive your family memories, and what video formats are available. Short answer is, you need some digital copies of those tapes. So we're going to look at some VHS conversion services.
Costco VHS to DVD Vs. Walmart VHS to DVD Service Comparison
We're fairly confident we can help you make a good decision on where to find the best vhs to digital service. We did a quick comparison of two of the most accessible VHS transfer services and compared them to our Forever Studios VHS tape transfer service.
Which two video transfer services do you ask? Well, there are many VHS to digital services online, but some people appreciate the apparent convenience of Costco DVD and Walmart DVD. Both companies are known for their low cost consumer products, easy shopping experience and good service, but does the same hold true for their VHS transfer service? Let’s take a closer look at the most important things to consider when transferring your VHS tapes; price, quality & dependability.
Costco VHS to DVD Overview
Let's be honest, we all love Costco. You're certainly not going to see us bashing them for any reason. The fact is, they're a great business with a well earned reputation. Costco offers a service for transferring VHS tapes to DVD to help preserve and modernize old home videos. Their basic service includes the transfer of up to 2 hours of VHS content onto a single DVD, with each additional hour incurring an extra cost. They also offer options for editing and enhancing the transferred content, such as adding chapter points and creating custom DVD menus.
To order the VHS to DVD transfer service from Costco, customers can simply visit a Costco Photo Center in-person with their VHS tapes, or they can also order the service online through the Costco website. Once the order is placed, customers are told to expect their transferred DVDs to be ready within 3 weeks for pickup at the selected Costco location.

Costco offer's a variety of Film to DVD services but are they worth it?
The ordering process involves filling out a form with details about the customer's contact information, as well as providing instructions for any specific requests regarding the transfer process. Customers can also choose to have their VHS tapes returned to them along with the DVDs, or they can choose to have them disposed of by Costco's photo center. Overall, Costco's VHS to DVD transfer service offers a convenient and affordable, if slightly impersonal, way to preserve and enjoy old memories in a modern format.
COSTCO VHS TO DVD PROCESS
At Costco, the VHS to DVD conversion process is handled by technicians who are trained to preserve and mildly enhance the quality of old video footage.
The technicians use specialized equipment to digitize the analog VHS content and ensure that the quality is maintained during the conversion process. Key word being "maintained". Don't expect anything special.
Once the conversion is complete, customers can expect a high-quality DVD with their original video content preserved. The final product will be a professionally produced DVD that is compatible with most modern DVD players and computer DVD drives. The DVD will also come with a customized label, making it easy for customers to identify the content.
Overall, customers can expect a seamless and professional VHS to DVD conversion process at Costco, resulting in a fairly high-quality final product that allows them to enjoy their old memories in a modern format. And we really do believe that if you choose to go with them, you're probably going to get a good quality product. But as we'll discuss later, you can do much better than "good", and not necessarily have to spend more money. In fact, by and large, you can expect better results for much less money.
COSTCO VHS TO DVD PRICING
The cost for this service ranges from $19.99 to $24.99 per tape, depending on the length of the VHS tape. This price includes the conversion of the VHS tape to a digital DVD format, as well as basic editing and labeling of the DVD. Additional copies of the DVD can be purchased for $4.99 each.
Costco also offers the option to upgrade to a USB transfer for an additional fee. The USB transfer allows for digital files to be stored and easily transferred to a computer or other digital devices.
It's important to note that Costco requires customers to be a member in order to utilize their VHS to DVD conversion service. Non-members are not able to access this service.
Walmart VHS to DVD Overview
Walmart also offers a service for transferring VHS tapes to DVD. Though, to be honest, we don't quite have the same opinion of Walmart as Costco, and that extends to their VHS to DVD service.

Wal Mart sells movies but is there strength in digitizing them?
Customers can bring their VHS tapes to a Walmart Photo Center and place an order with a team member. The tapes will then be sent to a secondary transfer facility where they will be converted to DVD format. This is something that we obviously can't advocate for. As soon as you introduce multiple layers and locations to a process, you're introducing uncertainty. And uncertainty is not what you want when you're dealing with potentially priceless memories.
The time it takes for the transfer process to be completed varies, and there is no real way to know what is going on with your order. Good luck getting answers from your local Walmart, honestly.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WALMART’S VHS TO DVD SERVICE
When a customer brings in their VHS tapes, the team at Walmart may check that the tapes are in good condition before they proceed with the transfer process, or they may just ship them on over to the third party location. The fact is, there are a ton of unknowns here, and how much you can trust this service really comes down to how much trust you have in your local Walmart employees, and Walmart as an organization.
As a provider of these services ourselves, we're trying to be fair here, but obviously the point we're trying to get across is that we really don't recommend giving your priceless memories to Walmart. And the reasons for that extend to their pricing.
COST TO TRANSFER VHS TO DVD WITH WALMART
Walmart charges $24.96 for their VHS to DVD transfer service. This fee includes the digitization of one VHS tape onto a single DVD, as well as the option to create additional copies of the DVD for an extra $9.74 each. If customers want their VHS tapes converted to a digital file, they can also opt for a USB drive for an additional fee of $14.96. It's important to note that these prices are for standard VHS tapes only.
If customers have VHS-C, Hi8, or MiniDV tapes, there may be additional charges. Additionally, customers should be aware that Walmart does not offer any editing or customization options as part of their VHS to DVD transfer service. If that sounds expensive, that's because it is. You can get the absolute best possible grade of transfers from Forever Studios for significantly less money, and that includes a premium Concierge experience and more.

RECENT FOREVER STUDIOS VHS TRANSFER TESTIMONIALS
"My experience was great right from the beginning. When I was researching what company to use to transfer my old videos I came across these great reviews of Forever Studios. I called and spoke to a very helpful and polite representative who answered all my questions and told me that they should be back in my hands before Christmas. The other companies were 8-12 weeks out.
I sent the first 15 tapes to them to try them out and had them back within 3 weeks.( I got them in the mail this past Thursday -12/21/23)
I only watched the first 20 minutes, and I’m waiting to surprise my family on Christmas Day and reminisce. Great quality! The team at Forever Studios was very good at responding to my phone calls in a professional manner.
Thank you for letting this Christmas be memorable."
Let's take a look at another!
“I am very very happy with Forever Studios’ service!!! Your old memories are priceless. I'll admit I was very nervous sending my VHS videos in. I did a small batch first and was very very happy with the service. I did pay more for the enhancement on my videos as they are 30 years old and I know they have degraded. I am happy with the cloud service too. I have since had them process the rest of my collection. They are great at answering phone calls and also all my questions with emails. I am grateful for their service!! Thank you Forever Studios!!!”
And one more for good measure.
“All the rumors are true, yes… this place is the very best. They have given me and my family a wonderful gift in helping to preserve our memories. They made it easy and were always available to help (I used the chat feature on their website) when I had a question about anything. I’m forever grateful to Forever Studios. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The service they did for me was converting home movies from VHS to digital form. ❤️”
